Wet day at Tucks - 4/26/25

Guest Blog from some of todays brave souls

On this late day in April, three of us former Boston residents set out for Tuckerman's Ravine via Pinkham's Notch. We started around 9 am at the trailhead and were greeted with a thick layer of fog on the way up with a hint of a drizzle. For the rest of the way up the trail we progressively got more and more wet, but were pleasantly surprised to see quite a lot of other groups making the trek. When we got to the hut at the top of the TRT, we could just about see Hillman's Highway but not the ravine. Then we make our way to Left Gully, where there was a pretty good bootpack set in wet corn. Some areas were a little icy and firm, especially over by the main headwall. We took a peak at the Chute, but decided to bail back to Left Gully to avoid the variable snow conditions: mostly corn, but some patches of ice and crust. After a descent down the gully (and a short pre-release / slip from one of our crewmates), we headed back up and traversed over to Hillman's Highway. Right after the gully headwall, there was pretty much no snow left and most of the traverse was on rocks and moss. Hillman's however was skiing great. It was mostly soft snow with a good amount of soft debris scattered throughout. Moguls and a small wiggle were prominent, but made for some fun turns. After we make it to the Sherb with only a tiny bit of walking. It barely is in and required a ton of grass skiing, a short excursion around a river, and one hike down to the next snow patch. Once we were down and back to the car, we were all soaking wet & feeling tired. But it was still a great day out there.
