Best Backpacks for Backcountry Skiing

Best Backpacks for Backcountry Skiing

Packs are a critical item for backcountry skiing so we've curated some of our favorites along with a list of features to look for that won't be found on traditional hiking packs.

1. Avalanche-tool / safety gear access & dedicated compartments

You should be able to access your beacon, probe, and shovel without pulling everything out of the pack.  Look for: internal sleeves for probe/shovel, front panel access, labelled compartments.

2. Ski/board carry system & attachment points

In backcountry you’ll often carry skis, skins, ice axe, crampons etc. The pack needs to handle gear securely. Look for: A-frame or diagonal ski carry loops, ice-axe/tool loops, strong ice/ax carry, reinforced attachment points. A helmet carry can be added on if not included.

3. Fit, comfort & weight

Since you’ll often be skinning/heaving uphill, pack weight and how it carries matter. We think this is arguably the most important feature of a pack, if it's not the right fit, it's not the right pack for you. Look for: torso sizing, ergonomic back panel, comfortable hip belt, lightweight yet durable materials, good back panel ventilation.

4. Volume appropriate for mission

Depending on whether it’s a day tour or multi-day alpine, your pack volume needs will differ. Look for: if day tour only: ~20-30 L; if longer or you carry skis and extra gear: ~30-40+ L.

5. Durable materials & weather resistance

Backcountry terrain punishes gear (branches, sharp edges, icy approach). In our experience, ski edges do the most damage to a pack (side panels and straps take a beating. Look for: robust fabrics (Cordura, rip-stop nylon), reinforced gear loops, water-resistant zippers or fabric, weather cover/compatible.

6. Organization & access

Quick access matters (especially when you need gear fast). Look for: multiple pockets (goggle pocket, hip-belt pockets), full-zip access, roll-top vs panel entry, and other features like upfront water carry and pockets accessable without taking the pack off.
