Carrying backcountry safety gear is at the top of the planning list for any tour in the White Mountains. Items like beacons, shovels, and probes should be in your pack anytime you enter avalanche terrain. Other items like crampons and ice axes should also be in your pack anytime you're heading into steep, firm, or uncertain terrain.
