HOKA Trail and Road Shoes: 2025 Lineup Guide
Hoka continues to iterate and add models to their trail lineup. We took a sneak peak at the SS26 lineup and they continue to release new models. Here's our offering for Summer 2025 with our pros / cons for each model. All are available at White Mountain Ski Co.
HOKA Tecton X 3
The Tecton X 3 is is a dream shoe on paper but falls short in ways the previous version excelled. We love the outsole, the cushion of the super foam, and the comfort of the gaiter. The big disappointment comes with the sock-like upper that just can't hold your foot in place for technical trail. We loved this shoe on smooth trail which is why it's so popular in regions with less rocks. It's worth adding into rotation if you have rolling terrain where you can hold a good pace. One other note is that it holds water and heat in.
- Weight: 9.7 oz
- Lug Height: 4mm
- Heel Stack: 40mm
- Forefoot Stack: 35mm
- Drop: 5mm
- Surface: Moderate to Technical Trails
HOKA Speedgoat 6
Why fix it if it's not broken. We were underwhelmed by the latest version of the Speedgoat 6. The two glaring issues - the midsole lost the squish that the speedgoat was known for and the tongue is short. We're hoping that version 7 in 2026 will fix these issues. That said, it's still a good shoe for technical trails. We tested these out on the Hardrock 100 course and they performed great.Â
- Weight: 9.8 oz
- Lug Height: 5mm
- Heel Stack: 40mm
- Forefoot Stack: 35mm
- Drop: 5mm
- Surface: Technical Trails
HOKA Mafate X
These things are boats. Do not confuse with the Mafate Speed 4s as these are more like the Stinson ATR model. The are incredibly comfortable at the cost of being heavy. The stack height is also some of the highest you'll see from any trail shoe. I could see this model being a good trainer but honestly it feels like a hype shoe (currently enjoying it on dog walks).
- Weight: 12.1 oz
- Lug Height: 4mm
- Heel Stack: 49mm
- Forefoot Stack: 41mm
- Drop: 8mm
- Surface: Smoother Trails
HOKA Challenger ATR 7
The challenger series has held strong, being a nice "house to trail" shoe, with a smooth ride on pavement but a little extra traction to handle non-technical trails. It's a very comfortable daily trainer.
- Weight: 8.9 oz
- Lug Height: 4mm
- Heel Stack: 31mm
- Forefoot Stack: 26mm
- Drop: 5mm
- Surface: Road & Light Trails
HOKA Mafate Speed 4
The Mafate Speed 4 has taken the crown from the Speedgoat 6 as the preferred shoe of White Mountain runners. It's not perfect but it ticks all the boxes - snug upper, midsole that adds protection without losing ground feel, and a grippy outsole. It also has a real tongue so appreciate it while it lasts, I'm sure the next version it will be gone.
- Weight: 10.4 oz
- Lug Height: 5mm
- Heel Stack: 33mm
- Forefoot Stack: 29mm
- Drop: 4mm
- Surface: Technical Trails
HOKA Clifton 10
Clearly not a trail shoe but can be worn on non-technical trails or races where there's only a small percentage of trail. An excellent "junk mile" shoe to carry the load of training miles.
- Weight: 9.0 oz
- Heel Stack: 42mm
- Forefoot Stack: 34mm
- Drop: 8mm
- Surface: Road
HOKA Ora Recovery Slide 3
The Ora Slide is our go-to after any run or hike. It should be in everyone's quiver.Â
- Weight: 7.8 oz
- Heel Stack: 40mm
- Forefoot Stack: 34mm
- Drop: 6mm
- Surface: Indoor / Recovery
