Ice Ice Baby: Omega - 3/28/26

By: Spencer Ralston

A late night phone call and a much appreciated day off of WMSC, landed me at the base of Cannon Cliff at 6am. Craning our necks up to the yellow drips of ice coming off the upper pitches of Omega (WI5+, 400ft), Ryan and myself racked up for the vertical terrain.

Pitch one was lacking a significant amount of ice, Ryan chose to tackle a corner system on the climbers right of the main route. After a few think hooks and turf shots we arrived at the anchor.

Pitch two was more of the same. Thin and delicate hooks lead to a small roof. Ryan cleaned out some rocks and ice and was able to dance his way up to the anchor and the start of the ice climbing.

Pitch three, the ICE!!! Ryan tapped his way up more egg shelled ice to the main curtain. After an impressive amount of clearing he found a black totem placement and continued forward. After cleaning some of the curtain and creating a small gear nest Ryan attempted to pull onto the main ice flow. Unfortunately, he popped a tool and took a small fall. After all this excitement, Ryan lowered back to the anchor and we rappelled back down to the ground.

A unique position on the cliff.

It was an impressive effort by Ryan to tackle this route in these conditions. Spring time can bring excellent skiing and climbing conditions :).
