Getting Chilly in Hillmans Highway 1/25/25

It was very cold at 05:00 this morning. Half asleep, Caleb and I moseyed our way up to Hermit Lake Shelter under the beautiful starry sky. The plan was to climb up Hillmans and traverse over to Dutches for a technical descent. With minimal beta, we relied on long exposure Iphone photos to get an idea for what we were in for. After lots of analyzation we decided it was doable. There are 3 choke points that require technical maneuvers. Entering Hillmans, we were quickly chilled with harsh winds moving down the face. As we slowly froze, we decided pushing for Dutches was out of the playbook. Climbing higher, we made it to softer snow and decided to find a place to transition.

Soft snow under a rising sun made for a nice few turns. The lower half was ice and less enjoyable. We spent some time in Hermit Lake warming up and watching the alpine glow shine on Tuckerman's. The Sherb was quick, fast, and firm.
