Stormy Sherb 1/3/2025
Jan 03, 2025
"Windy is the word of the day" as my buddy aptly put it as we skinned into the wind and snow up the Sherburne Ski Trail this morning. After a few conflicting reports about the condition of the trail and the amount of snow that fell I decided to see for myself. We were both pleasantly surprised at the coverage we found, snow blankets the trail from top to bottom. That being said, there are a significant amount of sharks to navigate along with a few patches of blue ice. GBA Glade Chief Ben Cargill was out there this morning trimming any blowdowns he found, thanks for the hard work Ben!
The top third or so of the trail yielded excellent turns with silky smooth drifts and minimal wind scouring. Once the first windy corner was reached we encountered more variable conditions with patches of firm snow adjacent to more smooth pockets. All water bars are still frozen over and partially filled in with the exception of one at the last turn heading back down to the car. This stretch can be navigated by a little side step; skis stayed on the whole way down. Overall conditions were better than expected and with the cold temps on the horizon we should have a solid base for the storms to come.
From the WMSC family to yours we wish you a happy and healthy 2025! Here's to more snow and good times in the New Year!
P.S. - Friday Night Nordic Lights kicks off this evening at Jackson XC from 6-8 pm. $10 registration fee per person includes pizza from Kringles. Bring your friends and a headlamp for what is sure to be a good time!
