The Presidential Traverse: A Crown Jewel of the White Mountains

If you're looking for the quintessential White Mountains experience, the Presidential Traverse—known affectionately as the “Presi”—delivers big in every category: mileage, vertical gain, rugged terrain, and sheer alpine beauty.

This iconic point-to-point route links together a series of prominent peaks named after U.S. presidents, including the tallest mountain in the Northeast, Mount Washington (6,288’). The traverse stretches from the northern Presidential Range near Mount Madison to Mount Jackson in the south, with nearly 13 miles spent entirely above treeline.

But don’t be fooled by the stats—this traverse is relentless. The steep, rocky ascents and descents are slow-going, and the ridge’s exposure means weather can change in an instant.


The Route

Most runners opt to complete the traverse north to south, frontloading the climbing and tackling the most technical terrain early. You’ll commonly begin from either the Valley Way Trailhead near Appalachia or the Daniel Webster Scout Trail at Dolly Copp Campground. Both offer access to Madison, but Valley Way is closest to a car spot at the Highland Center, while Daniel Webster adds aesthetic value and avoids the Madison out-and-back.

Along the way, the route tags the following peaks:

  • Mt. Madison – 5,367 ft
  • Mt. Adams – 5,774 ft
  • Mt. Jefferson – 5,712 ft
  • Mt. Clay – 5,533 ft (technically a sub-peak but often included)
  • Mt. Washington – 6,288 ft
  • Mt. Monroe – 5,384 ft
  • Mt. Franklin – 5,001 ft
  • Mt. Eisenhower – 4,780 ft
  • Mt. Pierce – 4,310 ft
  • Mt. Jackson – 4,052 ft

This route is a dream for ridgeline running, especially rare on the tree-choked trails of the East Coast. Emerging from the forest to 360° views and miles of open ridgeline, you’re met with that magical feeling of running above it all.


Water + Refuel Points

Water can be reliably accessed at:

  • Madison Springs Hut 
  • Clay Springs (short detour off-route)
  • Mt. Washington Summit (in summer months only)
  • Lakes of the Clouds Hut 
  • Sections of Crawford Path 
  • Highland Center (at the finish, if open)

These huts and facilities also offer a chance to check weather updates, snag a snack, or simply regroup before the next push.


Weather & Safety

The traverse is stunning—but not to be underestimated. Mount Washington is infamous for its severe weather, and nearly the entire route between Madison and Pierce remains above treeline. Proper gear, navigation skills, and an eye on the forecast are essential. Make sure to plan a car shuttle or drop-off at both ends to avoid an unwanted bonus hike.
